Interest in evidence based medicine and wide acceptance of electronic health information systems (HIS) have converged to generate interest, on the part of a number of veterinary organizations, in developing specialty-wide and even profession-wide standardized terminologies. In the past, organizations would collate a list of medical terms in a text file and make the lists available to interested members. More recently, terminology management and distribution methods have matured such that they are more acceptable for incorporating the standard into HIS.
The Virginia Tech Equine Medical Center has developed a list of terms to record equine patient diagnoses. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has funded the Veterinary Terminology Services Laboratory (VTSL) to identify existing SNOMED-CT concepts for each AAEP diagnostic term and simultaneously produce an AAEP-sanctioned subset of SNOMED-CT. This SNOMED-CT subset will share the same format and distribution structure as the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)'s diagnostic terms subset of SNOMED-CT. This should ease development burdens on the medical records vendors and lead to a more rapid implementation into systems.
