Public Health

The Veterinary Extension of SNOMED CT (VetSCT) facilitates the fast and accurate sharing of data between federal, state, and university-associated animal health laboratories and government agencies like the USDA. VetSCT is an essential component of the USDA's Animal Health Surveillance and Monitoring System (AHSM) and Emergency Management Response System (EMRS). These systems safeguard the public and the United States' food supply from threats like animal disease outbreaks, zoonotic diseases, and emerging diseases.

Integration of the Veterinary Extension of SNOMED CT (VetSCT) in electronic veterinary medical records supports the accurate use, interpretation, and sharing of veterinary data among different information systems. VetSCT reduces ambiguity in shared medical data, which improves patient care and safety. VetSCT may also be used to support animal health research and improve hospital efficiency and performance.
